THE GENDER PAY GAP – WHO IS TO BLAME?

Co-founders of career women's publication offer answers

ATLANTA - April 25, 2007 – In a recent study conducted by PINK magazine, nearly half of 2,400 women surveyed didn't ask for a raise or promotion in the previous 12 months.  But of those who did ask, 72 percent received one.

This confirms a study released Monday by the American Association of University Women that women earn less than men right out of college, and the gap continues to widen over time.

Given the evidence found at PINK's conference, the question now is: "are women to blame?"

"The widening pay gap comes as no surprise," explains Genevieve Bos, co-founder and publisher of PINK magazine.  "Although women are advancing in corporate America at record-setting levels, not enough women are advocating on their own behalf.  Women place much more value on their relationship with their higher-ups, and as a result, don't negotiate effectively."

In collaboration with KPMG, PINK magazine conducted in-depth research and asked professional women about their ambitions and goals at PINK's high-profile conferences throughout the U.S.  Ninety-five percent of the women described themselves as "ambitious," yet most of the women reported being at least "satisfied" with – if not fulfilled by – their jobs.  Surprisingly, few aspire to be CEO, but since nearly a third want to own their own businesses, many could end up in the C-suite anyway.
