FROM THE BOS KITCHEN WITH A GLASS OF RED WINE
Posted on March 31, 2008

OK, I don't cook often, but when I do, I will be bold and share with confidence that it is quite good. Just make sure you don't come over more than about five days in a row. Otherwise I may risk losing this beautifully crafted façade. This is in stark contrast to my gourmet mom, who thinks nothing of cooking for three hours because it gives her joy, and get this – she says "it's relaxing." But I do so appreciate the entire process of having people over for an evening, especially sharing it with friends. Like most PINK readers, I truly enjoy a good glass of wine with a wonderful meal. Although when some friends have us over, if the meal does not turn out as planned – you know who you are – we make sure that we at least bring a great bottle of wine and appetizers, and the night can still be great fun.

The shackles of Prohibition have recently been cast off in Georgia. Seriously. Most of my fellow Georgians are thrilled by the fact that we can now accept home wine delivery. Believe it or not, this is new in Georgia, and it's been a pleasure to jump out of the 18th century into modern day, much to the chagrin of the state wine distributors who have had a complete monopoly since Prohibition.

Recently a friend in Los Angeles turned me on to California Wine Club (cawineclub.com). I just got my second order of a limited-production, award-winning wine from a smaller vineyard – something I would never have been able to find myself. What I love is that the owners are a couple, Pam and Bruce Boring, who are passionate about what they do. What a life they must have. What could they even debate about? "Honey, I just really don't want to go to another award-winning vineyard today, where the fruit is ripe off the vine and the sun sets gorgeously into the horizon." No, I think not. But it does make me wonder. And more recently we were lucky enough to partner with them for PINK!

I am already making my gift list. What a totally great gift and something that can be part of a celebration – while, at the same time, supporting a small business. Those of you who know me know that this is a huge passion for me and my husband. So I am leaving the office just a tad early today since we just got a new coveted shipment. This is so fun, because it's like taking a trip to an elite vineyard while at the same time guaranteeing that we have at least something good to drink for my dear friend, who shall remain nameless, who cannot cook well at all but certainly has her heart in the right place. Now where can I find gourmet food delivery to bring to this friend's house as a gift next time she asks us over for dinner? If you have any suggestions, please e-mail me at gbos@pinkmagazine.com.

MY VALENTINE AND GO RED FOR WOMEN!

Posted on February 19, 2008

OK, so a lot has happened since I posted last time! I am excited to share the news. First, one of the best things in my life – yes, besides PINK – is the fact that next week is my 10th anniversary with my most wonderful husband, Remco Bos, CEO of AskRemco.com. Wow, am I lucky! I met this Dutchman in a hotel lobby in Barcelona 12 years ago. In fact, the New York Times wrote a half-page story on our eventful meeting in the business section last summer (yes, it was a slow news day). On that fateful day, I accidentally got stuck in the men's room at a hotel during a conference. I am embarrassed to share that I was looking in the mirror while walking fast, checking hair and makeup, never realizing that there were at least seven urinals behind me. I wasn't able to get out for 20 minutes – when a small conference let out. When I got back to the table where we'd been talking for a few hours, I casually told Remco that there was a "long line." I did not tell him the whole story until our honeymoon a year and a half later. I'm not sure why, but I did think it was quite funny and have had many chances to recount this amusing story to friends over a glass of wine (with much more color, of course).

There are not too many men who can handle or even would want to be married to a woman in the magazine business, much less a magazine designed to help women have beautiful lives and careers. I often credit this smart and joyful marriage choice to Barbara DeAngelis, former wife of the man who wrote Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus and author of Are You the One For Me, the single-best book I've ever read about relationships. It helped me to identify the character traits I wanted in a husband, ones I have been lucky enough to identify and enjoy in Remco. As a result, I have the most loving friend, companion and support system – and that is better than anything I ever dreamed possible. Seriously! And we are really looking forward to celebrating this the week of February 28. So I will be off on a ski trip that week, having fun while enjoying what a truly beautiful life it is!

On the business front, I've had some serious fun meeting some amazing women lately. Last week I was in Little Rock, Ark., giving the keynote speech to more than 500 women at the Go Red for Women campaign. I was honored to be hosted by some extremely successful women who have the best of both worlds – the elegance of the South and the smarts of the top businesswomen in America. What a dangerous combination! During my talk, the microphone started making an awful screeching sound – ironically, just as I was tearing into the statistics of how well women are doing economically in America. I was stopped in my tracks for at least a minute so the sound tech guy could fix the issue. Fortunately the audience of fabulous women took it in stride and we had a good laugh over it. In fact, one funny woman in the audience wondered out loud if a man was responsible. It was amazing to see all those women turn out to support the cause, because the No. 1 killer of women today is not breast cancer; it's heart disease – something we cannot see that often hits when it's too late. So I encourage you to check out their site (goredforwomen.org), get a checkup and learn more! Let's think more about supporting each other not only emotionally but physically as well – and that includes the health of our hearts!

THE POWER OF WOMEN
Posted on November 29, 2007

The power of women never ceases to amaze me. Being a part of PINK, and all that it stands for and accomplishes, has been an incredible gift for the entire staff – both personally and professionally. We've spent the past few months on the road, presenting our conference series in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and three other cities. And we've learned that women are supporting each other and trying to figure out how to squeeze the most meaning, satisfaction and enjoyment from life – all while being clear about the need to give back and make a real difference. All of us at PINK feel honored to host some of the most exciting and thought-provoking conversations between America's most accomplished women in business – all of whom have different perspectives and gifts to share.

But my favorite parts are the behind-the-scenes comments I sometimes get to hear. In fact, immediately after our last conference in Boston, I rushed to the ladies' room to change my shoes for the run to the airport. While I was hunched over unzipping my luggage, a group of four women came in toting their PINK magazine gift bags (loaded with everything from cosmetics to Spanx pantyhose). One of them immediately started rifling through her bag, exclaiming, "Wow! This is so cool! Le Mystere thongs! Do you guys believe it?" I had a good laugh. As I finished my quick change, she recognized me – from being onstage with Cynthia introducing the panelists and then closing out the program. Her eyes widened and she flushed with embarrassment, so I stepped in and offered, "All of us at PINK want to make sure we have you covered." We laughed, and I headed off to the airport.

The conference luncheons have been simply extraordinary, allowing us to promote a good number of amazing women-owned companies. At the same time, we bring the wisdom of the most influential businesswomen in America to the intelligent and motivated professional women who help us sell out our events each year.

ON HAVING FUN
Posted on October 10, 2007

"Don't tell anyone how much fun this is!" This is a direct quote from one of the most influential women in business in America, whom I had the pleasure of dining with recently.

I keep seeing it over and over again lately – the higher you go, the more fun it can be. Why? Because it's the power you have to effect meaningful change! No matter what career you choose, it's usually stressful no matter what. But certainly a huge lesson I keep learning from women who are really working as a reflection of their desire to do good, to make an impact and express their creative energy is this: You work the same amount of hours, give or take (stress is stress). Why not have a lot more fun, have a huge positive impact on the world and, oh, by the way, did I mention another nice bonus? Go ahead and make at least 10 times more money? Hmm, something to think about seriously for anyone who is turning down a promotion.

A man is not a plan. Eighty-five percent of women will be 100 percent responsible for retirement. More than half of all marriages will end in divorce. Are you protecting your credit? Are you covering your "assets"? I'm reading an incredible book right now, Suze Orman's Women and Money (Spiegel & Grau, 2007). It's my must read for any woman – no matter what professional level and no matter your financial status or standing. Do yourself the biggest favor in the world and read this book – and let me know what you think!
